Watkins Reception House ~ 1895

The Watkins Reception House, built in 1895 by Lera Thomas’s maternal grandfather (John Hayter Watkins) exemplifies the practice of enhancing a vernacular farmhouse with Victorian architectural features. Originally located in the Watkins Settlement, about 10 miles northwest of Nacogdoches just off the road to Cushing (Hwy 204), the home reflects both practical design and period style.

The original floor plan was a standard rectangular farmhouse with a dog-trot breezeway through the center. A water well on the back porch provided a convenient source of water. Victorian elements, including a bay window parlor and a front porch with “gingerbread” detailing, were later added to enhance the home’s style.

The house has been recently renovated with modern kitchen appliances, updated wallpaper, new windows, and air conditioning. It is now available as a rental venue for wedding receptions, parties, meetings, and other special events. The home seats 50 guests and accommodates up to 100 buffet-style; larger parties may rent tents for additional outdoor seating. The venue is heated and cooled, features two restrooms, and allows decorations, candles, and alcohol.
